Vedding, an add-on software module for the Versant Object Database, enables automatic fail-over and recovery in the case of hardware or software failure commonly known as a Fault Tolerance Server set-up.
Vedding uses synchronous replication between two database instances and supports transparent re-synchronization in the event of a failure. Synchronous database replication mirrors the contents of one database to another in a predictable and orderly manner. This provides either local or geographically remote redundancy, which protects against the unavailability of data. Besides sychronous database replication, you can also protect yourself against system failure with asynchronous database replication.
With Vedding's synchronous replication, two databases, the "replica pair", are kept in sync transactionally using parallel operations in a distributed two phase commit protocol. If a crash occurs to the database, Versant continues working by using the replica database. Once the crashed database becomes available again, Versant automatically resyncronizes the crashed database during operation and returns to fully replicated operation.
Versant Vedding is driven through configuration by the application process to support in-flight transaction recovery on failure. This approach offer a distinct advantage over the log based replication commonly found in database products.
