Versant (NASDAQ: VSNT) today announced the release of "Vorkout", an add-on module for its flagship product, Versant Object Database. Versant Vorkout is a Database Reorganization Tool that enables administrators to reclaim unused space in deployed database environments during normal operation. Vorkout detects available free space and automatically rearranges the allocation of data on the disk. In particular, applications that write and delete large amounts of data may experience dramatic runtime performance advantages.
Tightly integrated with Versant Vitness, an add-on module for monitoring and administration of the Versant Object Database, Vorkout provides the user the ability to analyze a Versant Object Database for fragmentation and wasted disk space through graphical views, and subsequently, control reorganization of the data in part or in its entirety.
As the amount of data grows in typically deployed applications, large amounts of data are continuously deleted. As a result, holes are created in a database resulting in fragmentation of data segments. As a consequence, disk usage is increased resulting in degradation of performance. In a newly compacted database, data is effectively repacked on the disk for maximum performance and efficient disk usage. Efficient allocation of data on the disk utilizes the database back end cache to the fullest extent, as each data segment in cache contains the maximum possible amount of data.
”Many of today’s software applications are designed to constantly write and delete large amounts of data”, says Jochen Witte, CEO of Versant Corporation. “We have responded to recent customer requests by implementing a revamped feature that enables our customers to easily analyze fragmentation of a database, detect free space, and reorganize the database on the fly. And all at the push of a button.”
The Vorkout add-on module is available immediately along with the recently released add-on module, Vitness. Vorkout is licensed separately on a per server basis. Please contact a Versant Sales representative for detailed information on pricing: 1-800-VERSANT or sales@versant.com.
