Versant HA Backup (V/HA Backup) is an add-on module enabling the Versant Database Engine to utilize the disk mirroring features of EMC Symmetrix or other enterprise storage systems. V/HA Backup supports online backup of very large data volumes without impacting the availability of the database.

V/HA Backup is highly recommended for 24/7 operations with SLAs > 99% managing large databases (> 100GB).

How V/HA Backup Works

Versant HA Backup is a generic tool to deploy a continuous online backup solution for the Versant Database Engine. The tool exploits the capabilities of enterprise storage devices, such as the EMC Symmetrix storage family. V/HA Backup allows the administrator to perform certain tasks such as:

• Fast database backup/restore without affecting the server availability
• Creation of duplicate production databases as a standby for decision support systems (DSS)

Versant's incremental backup strategy offers three backup levels. As database size increases the administrator can select the appropriate level to minimize backup size and time.

• Level 0 performs a full database backup
• Level 1 backs up all changes made since the last level 0 backup
• Level 2 backs up all changes made since the last level 0 or level 1 backup, whichever was most recent

Roll-forward (RF) archiving is another feature that preserves logical log records generated by a database during normal operation in a log archive. These records can be imported into a database during recovery. Thus, RF makes it possible to recover a database to its state just prior to the crash.
