Monitoring the production system is a cornerstone to properly manage adequate System & Network Management policies. Using V/MC for the advanced monitoring of your entire Versant Database Engine environment provides you with a fundamental tool for all Versant database administration operations.
What's going on under the hood?
Proactive database monitoring prevents potential unexpected production problems. The V/MC delivers real-time views of performance data and analytical information about the Versant Database Engine at your fingertips. For example, V/MC alerts administrators about potential issues before the database availability is affected. Can life get any easier?
V/MC lets you individually monitor and remotely control your entire deployed Versant Database Engine environment. And thanks to a finely configurable alert facility, you can proactively take action on potential problems before they become real ones. In fact, Versant's system monitoring is a cornerstone to properly establish adequate System & Network Management (S&NM) policies required in large enterprise deployments. The V/MC also provides remote management capabilities making it a fundamental tool for all database administration tasks.
Multiple Simultaneous Database Monitoring
Designed as an Eclipse-based RCP client, V/MC provides an extensive set of real-time database activities and detailed performance metrics. Data from multiple Versant Database Engine systems can be viewed simultaneously. And connecting to many systems at once is easy, because the V/MC dynamically discovers agents and databases with no configuration on your part.

The Bigger Picture – In Detail
The V/MC client gives you everything you need to monitor your databases and servers right out of the box:
- Displaying the database structure and configuration information
- Dynamic sampling of physical and logical log volumes
- Dynamic sampling of volumes usage
- Volume fragmentation maps
You can display dynamic statistics and information on sessions, transactions and locks. And when it comes to individual monitoring requirements you’ll feel right at home with V/MC, as you can customize statistics and logging.

Individual Monitoring You can easily customize statistics and logging individually.
Extensive Alert Facility
High availability requirements for 24/7 operations and 99.999% up time are becoming increasingly common. The Versant Database Engine is a proven database server for these mission critical applications. The V/MC module supports these environments, providing configurable thresholds and event-triggered alarms, as well as configurable alarm logging and notification.
Highly Evolved Management Console and Remote Agent
The V/MC for Versant Database Engine is based upon the OSGi technology standard. The V/MC console is an Eclipse-based (RCP) graphical tool that runs on any platform, independent of a specific Versant Database Engine installation. The console presents ongoing activities of the monitored database environment.
The multi-threaded remote agent resides on the Versant server system. The SNMP v2 compliant agent allows multiple protocol adapters, and integration as a subagent with standard master agents, as well as SOA-based application design for integration with other system management tools.
V/MC is designed as a tool for monitoring Versant Database Engine installations. However, V/MC also provides an extensible framework for additional administrative and management components such as license management, database compaction with Versant Compact and more.
Furthermore, V/MC can keep itself up-to-date. The built-in update mechanism will download and install any improvements or new components as they are introduced.
The V/MC module is an integral part of Versant Database Engine version 8 or later.
